Clary Sage Essential Oil (Salvia Sclarea)

Clary Sage belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is a relative of the common Sage plant. Sage is often used in cooking, however, Clary Sage is more often used in Aromatherapy.

Clary Sage grows in several countries, but is cultivated mostly in Spain and France. It is propagated by seed. It does not transplant well, so you should plant the seeds where you want them to grow.

This biannual plant is often grown as an ornamental. It has flowers that change colors depending on the light, from white or cream colors, to pink and purple, This elegant plant has hairy leaves and grows to about 3 feet in height. Clary Sage essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves. In the hot sun, the leaves will emit a strong odor, so plant away from doors and windows.

Historically, Clary Sage was thought of as an oil for protection and insight. It was used to increase the euphoric effects of beer and wine. Today, it is used as a fixative in the perfume industry and a flavoring in many food and beverages. It is one of the herbs used in Italian Vermouth.

Clary Sage regenerates energy and can induce a kind of euphoria. Uplifting the mind and emotions, it brings out creativity and confidence. It is a great herb and oil for stressful situations, calming the nervous system and strengthening focus.

These revitalizing properties are not Clary Sage's only attributes. It has been called a lady's best friend for centuries. It helps with most woman complaints throughout her entire lifetime. Including: PMS symptoms, postpartum blues and menopause. It could be the estrogen-like hormone it contains that help level mood swings, relieve menstrual pain and cramps, even halt hot flashes.

Clary Sage stimulates the adrenals. That is why it is uplifting for the spirits and emotions, greatly reducing stress. It is recommended for meditation, dream quests and to induce creativity.

When you soak the seeds in water they create a thick mucilage, which has been traditionally used to clean the eyes. Hence it's name Clary or "Clear eye".

Clary's anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and bactericidal properties aids in the healing of those suffering from colds or bronchitis. Use in a diffuser or bath.

The astringent, toning, bactericidal and antiseptic properties are good for treating wrinkles, greasy, troubled or acne prone skin. Use in a facial, compress, steam bath or sauna.
