Geranium
Pelargonium graveolens

Geranium essential oil is distilled from the fragrant leaves of the Pelargonium graveolens plant. There are over 700 species of this perennial available. Many have leaves that smell like lemon, rose and apple among many more. But for aromatherapy purposes, the Geranium imported from Egypt, also known as Rose Geranium, is the most often used.

This easy to grow plant can be grown indoors or out, in containers or in flower beds. It is relatively a low growing plant but without pinching back, it can become lengthy and grow up to 3 feet in height. The flowers come in many colors including white, pink and red. But it is the leaves that provide the glands that contain it's essential oil.

Geranium leaves are bitter and not often eaten. But they still are used as a flavoring in cooking and then dispelled. Of course, Geranium leaves are a great addition to any potpourri blend and herbal sachets. The leaves can even be rubbed directly on the skin when needed.

Geranium essential oil is a must have in any aromatherapy kit. It has unique properties that balance to what the body needs and it actually regenerates tissues and nerves while riding toxins from the liver. This is of great value for any detox program, your skin, female and hormone related issues and well as the entire circulatory system.

Geranium's antidepressant properties are beneficial for most emotional issues from PMS, tension and anxiety, to frustration and irritability. It promotes positive thought patterns that brings on a feeling of calm, strength and security. It is great when suffering from nervous exhaustion due to stress and being overworked.

Geranium essential oil is safe and gentle to use. It's revitalizing effect on the skin makes it a good choice for all skin types and skin conditions. Use for acne, aging skin, bruises, cellulite, eczema, psoriasis, shingles and hemorrhoids. Perfect added to your favorite massage oil for its skin regenerative abilities and its emotional benefits.

Geranium has two other traits that can't be overlooked. It has a high Citronellol content which makes it a natural insecticide. Add to a spritzer bottle of water for a natural mosquito spray. Grow Geraniums near your house or porch to keep all the pesky insects away.

Also Geranium is anti-fungal. Use it for dandruff, nail fungi, athletes foot and ringworm.

With all the benefits Geranium oil possesses, and its sweet and fresh scent that mellows with time, it is a great addition to your aromatherapy kit and your life.

Geranium's Medicinal Properties Include: Analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, antidepressant, antibacterial, antiseptic, astringent, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, deodorant, diuretic, expectorant, fungicidal, hemostatic, insecticide, regenerative, sedative, tonic, vulnerary.
