Herb & Essential Oil of the Month
Sweet Orange - The Herb and the Oil
Oranges are a very nutritious fruit, containing vitamins A, B, and C. The Orange tree gives us 3 essential oils: Sweet Orange from the skin (orange), from blossoms (neroli Portugal), and from the tips of branches and leaves (petitgrain).
It's My Nature only carries the sweet orange essential oil. It is ideal for someone becoming familiar with aromatherapy. It has a sweet, warm scent and can be easily mixed with other essential oils. Great for use in the home or at the office to create an uplifted and joyful atmosphere. Also very soothing and beneficial to dry, irritated, or acne-prone skin conditions.
Therapeutic Properties: antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, bactericidal, digestive, fungicidal, among others.
Sweet Orange Herb Usage
Tea - Blend dried, chopped orange rind with black tea.
(Add clove and cinnamon stick during the holidays.)
Bath - Add dried peeling to bath water as an antiseptic
and aromatic bath. Use a bath ball or muslin bag to contain rind.
Helps warm the body, improve circulation and is great for the
skin.
Simmering Pot - Simmer in a pan of hot water on the stove.
Experiment with pine, eucalyptus, clove, cinnamon and allspice.
Culinary - Used to flavor vinegar, cakes, cookies, puddings,
ice creams, etc.
Pomander - Take a large, fresh orange and punch a lot of
holes in it with an ice pick. Put a whole clove in each hole until
the fruit is completely studded with the spice. Roll the fruit
in a mixture of equal parts of powdered orris root and cinnamon
to which a few drops of orange oil have been added. Use about
1 1/2 tablespoons of this mixture for each large orange. Wrap
the prepared fruit in tissue or foil and set aside to dry. It
will shrink considerably over the weeks. When dry, tie a decorative
ribbon or gold cord around it. Give as presents to hang in a closet
or pantry.
Pure Essential Oil Usage
Inhalation - Very uplifting - influence on mood is positive
and joyful. Harmonizes feelings and awakens creativity.
Gingivitis - The oil may be used as a mouthwash or may
be applied undiluted to the gums.
Skin - Beneficial and soothing to dry irritated skin. Regenerative
properties make it good for aging or rough skin.
Massage - Stimulates circulation. Dilute with a carrier
oil.
First Aid - Fever reducing remedy.

Herbs for the Holidays
Allspice - Resembles a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. When consumed as tea, it helps warm parts of the body that often get cold.
Cinnamon - The warm and spicy flavored bark of cinnamon has powerful antiseptic properties and helps correct nausea. Good for indigestion and nervous stomach. Japanese research reports that cinnamon reduces blood pressure. Not recommended for children under 2.
Clove - Has anesthetic and antiseptic properties and is useful for toothaches. In a tea, clove helps bronchitis and soothes the muscle lining of the digestive track, thus helping indigestion and to prevent vomiting. Not recommended for children under 2.
Ginger - Its sweet smelling roots have anti-nausea properties. Relieves motion sickness, morning sickness, menstrual cramps and dizziness (vertigo). Chew on the root, drink tea or ginger ale to receive the effects.
Please Note: We do not carry these holiday herbs at It's My Nature, however, we do carry essential oils of Cinnamon, Clove, Fir Needle, Nutmeg and Sweet Orange. Available individually or in our Holiday Sampler . Check them out at http://www.itsmynature.net/html/EssentialOils.html

Ease The Stress
Stress activates the body's fight-or-flight reflex that prepares
us to cope with emergencies. It triggers the release of stress
hormones that increase respiration and heart rate, elevate blood
pressure and raise blood sugar levels. In today's hectic world,
this fight-or-flight reflex often works overtime, causing chronic
stress and it's symptoms: headaches, heartburn, neck or shoulder
pain, an irritable bowel, chronic fatigue, anxiety attacks, substance
or food abuse, and a worsening of other conditions because stress
depresses the immune function.
What can we do? Here are a few ideas to incorporate into your
life that will go along way in reducing your stress:
Recognize your stress symptoms. Are you shoulders and neck tense? Breathing shallow? As soon as you recognize and acknowledge your stress signals ask yourself "What is really bothering me"? Just determining why you are feeling stressed helps you take control of the situation and relieve the stress.
Rate your stress. If you are having trouble thinking your stress is manageable, rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being a catastrophe and 1 being a minor hassle like breaking a shoe lace. Most problems rate somewhere in the 2 to 5 range. Rating your stressors helps you put the problems in perspective.
Stop trying to be perfect. Demanding perfection only produces stress because no one is perfect. Do your best but don't expect perfection from yourself or others.
Laugh. Laughter deepens breathing, eases tension, and adds extra oxygen and nutrients to the blood. When stress strikes, try to find something to laugh about. Laugh at yourself. Life is too serious to be taken so seriously!
