Herb & Essential Oil of the Month
Lavender - The Herb And The Oil
Lavender is known as the most versatile herb and it has been used for centuries. Both the herb and the oil have a soothing and calming effect on our bodies. It is very effective for relieving stress. And because it is very gentle, lavender essential oil is one of the few oils that can be used directly on the skin. (neat)
Therapeutic Properties: antibiotic, analgesic, antiseptic, anti-depressant, sedative, detoxifier, diuretic, among others. Here are some great ideas for usage that will help you wind down after a stressful day (or week, or life)!
Dried Lavender Herb Usage
Tea -1 teaspoon of dried or 2 teaspoons fresh Lavender flowers.
Steep 10 minutes.
Great remedy for digestive problems. Has a relaxing effect, good
for irritablity, headaches and depression.
Bath -Place 1/4 cup of Lavender flowers in a small muslin bag
or large tea ball. Steep while you bathe.
Helps heal wounds, burns and sore muscles. Has anti-bacterial
and antiseptic properties.
Lavender Water -
Stimulates complexion, aromatic astringent, cleanses skin.
Pure Essential Oil Usage
Inhalation - Relieves stress, nervous tension, depression,
calms emotions and induces sleep.
Bites & Stings - Rubbed on insect bites, it relieves pain
and inflammation. It can be used to treat scabies and head lice.
Earache - Place 2 drops of neat Lavender oil on cotton ball and
plug into the ear.
Massage - Apply directly to sore, exhausted muscles. Rub on sprains,
strains & stiff joints. Particularly good for dry skin. Tip:
Mixing 12 to 30 drops of essential oil to a carrier oil such as
Sweet Almond Oil makes it go a lot further and it's easier to
cover larger areas.
First Aid - Apply to burns, cuts, scratches, pimples, wounds.
Lavender blends well with most essential oils, especially citrus
and florals. For a relaxing bath to help you sleep, add 8 drops
lavender essential oil and 2 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
to a tubful of warm water. Disperse it through the water with
a few strokes of your hand. For added pleasure, light a few candles,
put on some soothing music and sip a cup of tea. http://www.itsmynature.net/html/TeaCorner.html
15 minutes of this and you will feel refreshed, renewed and ready
to face the world again.
Lavender is so popular, we have given it a special page of
its own!

Ease The Stress
Computers, fax machines, email and other technology and equipment
have speeded up our lives. We can get more done in a shorter period
of time so we have more time to get even more done. The result
- Stress and lots of it!! And with the Holidays just around the
corner, you know the stress will only increase during the next
few months. (Sorry I had to bring that up!)
Your first reaction may be "I don't have time for this." Think of it this way - When we go at a fast, stressful pace all the time and don't take time for ourselves - for exercise, relaxation and restoration, our health and well being may suffer. When this happens, we are not doing ourselves or our loved ones any good. When we take just a little time for ourselves, everyone benefits.
Here are a few simple ideas to consider implementing to alleviate some of the stress and bring a little comfort into your daily life:
Be good to yourself. Buy yourself flowers or a special treat at the grocery store from time to time.
Put a drop or two of a favorite essential oil on a tissue. Carry the tissue with you and inhale the aroma deeply throughout the day.
Chill your eye pillow in the freezer and enjoy a 10 minute break before cooking dinner. You'll be amazed at how much this can revive you after a crazy day.
Find moments of quiet time and reflection . Even if just for a few moments, spend time doing nothing each day. This helps you calm down, focus and feel settled. If possible, meditate daily. Just a few minutes a day will make a big difference in your entire life.
Shake a few drops of your favorite essential oil onto your hairbrush to scent your hair and alter your mood. Experiment with different fragrances. For example, lavender eases tension, rosemary sharpens mental focus and sandalwood promotes relaxation.
